Pembe Za Ndovu (The Mombasa Tusks) are an iconic symbol of the city of Mombasa. These giant elephant tusks are made of white concrete and were erected in 1952 to commemorate the visit of the British royal couple. The Mombasa Tusks are a very popular spot for photos and represent an essential part of the Mombasa panorama. Nearby is the Uhuru Garden city park, where people rest on the ground and bats in the trees. Besides the Old Town, which is definitely worth a visit, you can visit a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Shiva.
You should definitely not miss a visit to the Municipal Market, as a genuine market atmosphere truly prevails here all day long. There is an abundance of tropical fruit on offer, such as the tropical jackfruit, which can weigh around ten kilos, or the fruits of the custard apple, which looks like a bumpy pineapple and, when cut open, has white pulp with large black seeds. In the adjacent alleys, not only spices, coffee, and tea are sold, but also everyday goods and all the surplus items that local people no longer need and offer to others. It’s impossible to resist the aroma or color of the spices. You can buy not only scarves with inscriptions for tourists but also wise proverbs in Swahili or hundreds of meters of fabrics, which are unique in their bright, rich colors.
